Everything came together in a flash! I’d been planning a self-care and sister-sister trip for November, but I only had three flight segments booked: Los Angeles – Taipei – Bangkok on Starlux Airlines business class, Abu Dhabi – London on Etihad Airways “First Apartment” first class, and Lisbon – Paris – San Francisco on Air France business class – all on award tickets. With so much unplanned, I was ready to jump on any last-minute openings. (After all, I’ve handled plenty of spur-of-the-moment changes for my family of four, so it’s easier flying solo!)
Then, on October 21, 2024, I made a snap decision to switch my outbound to United Airlines “Polaris” business class through Avianca LifeMiles (69,000 miles + $ 53 taxes) redemption to fly me to London, just so I could catch Japan Airlines’ new first class on Airbus A350-1000 from London to Tokyo. It debuted on October 24, which is about the perfect timing!
What Makes Japan Airlines’ A350 First Class So Special?
Japan Airlines’ A350-1000 first class has set a new standard in premium travel. The launch on the London – Tokyo route is their third international route upgraded from their older Boeing 777-300ER. Because only three international routes currently feature the new A350 first class, it instantly adds a layer of exclusivity. After all it was only six of them, in 1-1-1 configuration. Starting Oct 24, 2024, Japan Airlines flies the latest aircraft on JL 44 (London to Tokyo) flight and JL 45 (Tokyo to London) flight on alternate date.
Check-In: A Smooth Start? Almost
At London Heathrow Airport, Japan Airlines’ first class check-in process was organized but not quite as seamless as I’d hoped. The area was compact – even the first class section felt small. I arrived about 10 minutes before the check-in gate opened, only to find a crowd gathered in front, without a clear queue. Once the check-in counter finally opened, the economy class line spread along, making me wonder, “Did I accidentally get in the wrong line?”
Thankfully, the staff for first class passenger greeted me personally at the counter and explained that it was their first day using a new system, so things were moving at a snail’s pace. One thing worth mentioning: if you’re used to Japan Airlines first class, you might remember the distinctive burgundy “First Class” luggage tags. This time, there were none – they just reassured me that priority was marked in the system. I was invited to British Airways Galleries First Class Lounge, where their Private Dining was quite impressive, and I would leave it to review in a separate post.
But once I stepped aboard the A350-1000 aircraft, all thoughts of the check-in delays vanished. I was finally in my private suite, ready to embark on an unforgettable journey!
The Seat: Roomy For Relaxation
In this new Japan Airlines first class, every inch of your seat matters, and they know exactly how to elevate the experience. The seat is so spacious and it feels like it could fit three people – yes, it’s just that roomy! I was genuinely wowed when I first saw it in person. The space was designed with seating on both ends. Sitting on each side felt like a journey in itself, allowing me to imagine sharing this indulgent experience with loved ones.
When it was time to rest, the Japan Airlines flight attendant came over to help prepare my bed. The suite’s design was incredibly thoughtful – you could have your bed set up while still enjoying a seat right next to it. This setup made the experience feel both luxurious and comfortable, perfect for a restful journey.
Ample Storage, Even For Petite Travelers!
If I had to pick the most game-changing feature on this latest aircraft, it would be the underseat compartment. Storage in first class might not sound exciting, but trust me, Japan Airlines A350-1000 makes it noteworthy. As a petite person, overhead compartments have always been stressful for me. When I first took my seat on the A350, the flight attendant told me, “Just place it under your seat in front.” I didn’t understand at first – then she showed me the compartment and closed it. Oh my god, what a genius design! They’ve moved the storage from the overhead compartment to a doored compartment on the floor. It’s spacious enough to fit my 20” carry-on, three bottles of whiskey (including two Hibikis – their boxes are sizable), and my 17” handbag.
The storage didn’t stop there. There was a dedicated spot for tea beside the main seat. When I wasn’t using it, I could close it and use it as an additional seat – perfect if someone needed to sit next to you when the bed was open. Another thoughtful touch was the long closet with a mirror for jackets. It’s these thoughtful touches that make Japan Airlines A350-1000 first class feel like it was designed with each traveler’s comfort in mind, regardless of stature or storage needs.
Equipment In The First Class
With USB-C, USB-B, and even wireless charging, this seat makes staying connected simple, without needing extra adapters. Although the wireless charger was a bit slower on my iPhone than the other outlets, it was still convenient.
The display screen is phenomenal – 4K High Definition brings your entertainment to life. There’s also a tablet screen that’s both easy to navigate and convenient for someone like me, who can be a little clumsy.
The best part? The in-seat speaker. Imagine enjoying music or your favorite show without having to reach for headphones. I nearly forgot about the provided noise-canceling headsets because the speaker was so immersive! This feature transforms the A350-1000 first class into a private entertainment lounge, making each moment as comfortable as it is captivating.
Privacy At Its Finest
If privacy is your top priority, Japan Airlines’ A350-1000 first class suite has you covered. Each suite features a sleek, sliding glass door that adds an extra layer of exclusivity. The door is transparent enough to feel open and airy, yet private enough to make you feel like you’re in your own little world. Whether you’re catching up on work, watching a movie, or simply sinking into solitude, the suite’s design lets you enjoy it all without interruptions.
Fine Dining At 35,000 Feet? Yes, Please!
Japan Airlines redefines in-flight dining with a menu crafted by chef Hayashi Daisuke of the renowned “ROKETSU” in London. As soon as we took off, I was presented with an elegant multi-course Japanese meal, each course beautifully plated and paired with exceptional wines. The food wasn’t just about sustenance, it was an experience. Japan Airlines’ attention to culinary detail makes this a restaurant-quality meal – at cruising altitude. As a fan of flexibility, I loved that after the main meal service, I could order from an à la carte menu whenever I wanted. With dishes inspired by traditional Japanese flavors and international touches, every meal was a journey within itself, curated to perfection.
Drinks Worth Toasting To
Let’s talk drinks because Japan Airlines didn’t skimp here, either. Their wine list included some stellar choices, but I kept coming back to the Riesling and Umeshu – a Japanese plum wine that perfectly complemented the multi-course meal. And, of course, there was champagne. Japan Airlines had the rare Champagne Billecart Salmon Cuvée Louis Salmon 2012 on this route, a treat that felt like the perfect way to celebrate this exceptional flight. If you’re lucky enough to fly this route from Tokyo, Japan Airlines even offers Champagne Salon 2013 – a luxury you don’t often see in the skies.

How I Scored This First Class Seat: Award Redemption Magic
The best part? I didn’t pay the $16,000 ticket price. Instead, I redeemed 90,000 American Airlines miles and around $300 in taxes, making this trip an outstanding value. Award availability on the A350-1000 are hot since the route launched on October 24, 2024, with flights every other day.
