There’s more than one way to get to Rome. My friends outside the States asked, “What’s the big deal with this Hawaiian and Alaska merger?” I told them it’s like getting pineapple on your pizza—some people love it, some are skeptical.
I wish I had a crystal ball . I confessed I was on the fence about transferring those Amex points to Hawaiian Airlines.
With the Department Of Justice has given a thumbs-up to the Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines merger, the deal is inching closer to reality. Rumor has it that Hawaiian Miles might eventually morph into Alaska Mileage Plan miles, which has some travelers dreaming big.
I may not have a crystal ball. But here are a few ways to hedge your bets on those Hawaiian Miles turning into Alaska gold:
- Transfer Amex points now and snag a 20% bonus. This ends at 11:59 Mountain Time on August 31, 2024.
- Apply for the Hawaiian Airlines co-branded credit cards. Their recent elevated offer up to 70,000 miles.
One of the ways to get Hawaiian miles (hopefully turn into AS mileage) is the credit card. Their elevated offer on business card will end on 9/11/2024. It is an easy earn – up to 70K Hawaiian miles after spending $2,000 within 90 days.
3. Buy points by 9/13/2024 at $0.0169 per mile.
Let’s not overlook the value of Hawaiian Miles on their own.
Hawaiian Airlines isn’t just about the usual suspects like Tokyo and Osaka. They’ve also got direct flights to Fukuoka—no need for those pesky domestic transfers in Japan.
The solid award availability between Hawaii and hot spots like Seoul, Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Sydney, Hawaiian is a strong contender for your Asia travel plans. For example, a one-way business class seat with lie-flat comfort between Honolulu and Sydney will set you back just 65,000 miles. Not too shabby, right?
Why all the buzz about Alaska Miles in this merger?
Alaska’s Mileage Plan is like the Swiss Army knife of frequent flyer programs, especially for Asia travel, thanks to its Oneworld membership:
– **75,000 miles** for a one-way business class flight between the U.S. West Coast and Taipei.
– **Free stopovers** up to 14 days—who doesn’t love a mini-vacation on the way to their vacation?
– **Oneworld award chart alignment** for more bang for your buck.
Alaska Domestic flights within 700 miles for **4,500 miles**? That’s practically pocket change for my recent San Francisco – Seattle vacay!
Partners Deals like 7,500 AS miles from Shanghai to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific economy or 15,000 miles from Seoul to Hong Kong in Cathay’s A350 business class, are just too good to pass up.
I even haven’t listed those transatlantic and Europe.
So, what’s your move?
Are you ready to roll the dice and make that speculative points transfer or purchase? Will you plan for their cards to get the easy 70,000 HA miles ?
My take? There’s more than one way to get to Rome.
